SA Hockey IPT 2023 | Tight Tussles setup Third day Tightrope

The Four A Section games on Day 2 were incredibly tight with no team winning by more than 2 goals across the four games.

Northern Blues and Southern Gauteng have shared the last four titles at the SA Hockey IPT two apiece. Any game between the two teams that busses are emblazoned with “GP” number plates are right affairs and today was no different. A defensive masterclass by both teams made it an attritional game that was won by the slightest of touches by Maikemisetso Marokoane that forced the ball narrowly passed Nepo Serage and gave the defending champions a second victory in the tournament.

SG Witsies sauntered off into a 3-0 lead against Free State looking good value for money for a comfortable victory. Olivia Dillon opened the scoring before Neo Matlou and Hannah Smyth put an inevitable victory on the plate. But Free State showed some great fight and pulled a goal back through a penalty corner finished by Shindre-Lee Simmons. They would set up a grandstand finish when Myburgh scored with three minutes left on the clock, disappointingly though they were unable to level the score.

The hosts and North West produced an incredible game that both led but ultimately settled for a draw. Malika Hamza helped create and finish an opportunity to give the Raiders the early lead but legendary defender Kim Hubach levelled through a stroke. Teshawn de la Rey then gave North West the lead in the third quarter when she reacted to her own shot being saved to finish. It was the Raiders who had to dig deep this time and they found their equaliser through Cailynn den Bakker, firing in a diagonal reverse stick into the bottom right corner ending a pulsating game in a 2-2draw.

Western Province maintained their perfects tart to the tournament with a much tougher victory against South Africa Under 21. Quanita Bobbs led from the front scoring twice in the opening quarter. The first coming from a stroke after a goal bound effort struck a defender on the line, the second a sensational reverse stick over Morgan de Jagers head. Rea Phume did well to pull a goal back for the national youngsters deflecting in a penalty corner but Western Province secured the victory when Nicole Koenig scored a late deflected goal to wrap up the victory.

In the B Section a Bianca Wood hat-trick along with goals from Jamie-Lee Marais and Thabalani Metu gave Border a thrilling 5-3 win over the KZN Mynahs. Hannah Nero, Megan Corjees and Ruby Kraus netted for the hosts. Mpumalanga were another who were comfortable in their victory over Eastern Gauteng. Their goals by Anja Tromp (2), Chizelle Benson, Zanelle Moller and Kaylee Ferreira too much for Shanae Page consolation goal.

Eastern Province saw a brace for Tristan Howard and another for Tasmyn Preller supported by a goal for Mathapelo Pitsoto see off the challenge of Easterns U21 easily enough, while Neo de Villiers and Monique Bronn scored early for SACD despite Elzabeth Andersons goal for the Robins it was a victory for SACD. In the Eastern Gauteng battle the senior side edged the U21 with Shanae Page and Stacey Bbooyens getting the job done.
